ABSTRACT
A distinctive feature of sport in the USA is the way in which sporting talent is nurtured through the high-school and college system. It is this system which will be the focus of this part of the chapter. Although unique to the USA, it is a system which is now being experimented with in a number of other cultures; indeed, the growth of sports colleges and university sports scholarships in the UK has, in some ways, been shaped by the success of the system across the Atlantic.
