ABSTRACT

The main concern at present is the apparent rise in the different forms of cheating in sports – e.g., drug abuse, bribing of officials and the kind of ‘technological cheating’ that occurs in sports such as Formula 1 motor racing. Cheating is not, however, a new concept. We know that the Olympians of ancient times took ‘tonics’ to try to increase their performances. Some might argue that cheating is an important element of sport – without which sport would be dull.
