ABSTRACT
Sometimes people wish to build an extension or dwelling on a steeply sloping site. When this occurs, there could be problems with the foundations. Approved Document A indicates that the height between the floor slab on one side and the lower ground on the other should not exceed four times the wall thickness. The obvious solution to the problem is to thicken the inside skin of the wall to make the foundations comply or ask an engineer for calculations.
