ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on the detailed evidence gathcred over a number of years by the ImpaCT2 project (Becta, 2002), a government-funded project that investigated the relationship between ICT and school achievement at Key Stages 2 , 3 and 4 (pupils aged 11, 14 and 16). The design of the ImpaCT2 study was innovative, in that the research team not only conducted a large-scale statistical analysis of data on ICT usage and attainment, it also set up research teams in 60 schools to gather case-study data on how computers were used in classrooms and out of lessons, sometimes using pupils as well as teachers as researchers. Bringing together information from a range of studies, therefore, the ImpaCT2 team was able to obtain detailed evidence on how computers were being used in schools, and on how a variety of pedagogies connected pupils to information and communication technologies in a wide range of subjects.
