ABSTRACT

Assessment of the role of the EU in the global economy requires examination of how European business is both affecting and affected by the process of globalisation. Much of Chapter 1 has highlighted how the onset of globalisation is altering prevailing models of economic and political management, especially at member state level. This chapter looks at the flipside of this question and analyses the importance of the EU and the activities of European business to the development of the global economy. The chapter initially discusses the globalisation

performance of the European economy and its businesses in the context of the broader international economic environment. An assessment of the impact of European business is then undertaken within the context of emerging economic nationalism – a threat to the internationalisation of markets.
