ABSTRACT
Efficient transportation systems are essential for the competitiveness of European business and to the process of economic integration. The Community’s founders signalled the importance of transport by according it its own title within the Treaty of Rome (Articles 74-84 – later to become Articles 70-80), the only sector apart from agriculture to be treated in this way.
