ABSTRACT
Whatever one thinks about the world today – whether it is even possible to speak of a world, as opposed to worlds – one unavoidable fact of life, so early in the twenty-first century, is that it has been shaped decisively by the dream of human freedom, which itself has largely been a dream of ‘the free individual’.
