ABSTRACT
Although otonomi daerah is the slogan of the day, and a fair sharing of locally produced wealth between Jakarta and the region is being negotiated, more is at stake than a distribution of money and power. People in Indonesia's provinces are reassessing their relations to the wider world: not only their immediate surroundings and the directives from Jakarta are changing, but also their ideas of belonging, their orientations and their range of action.
