ABSTRACT
The earliest reference to the game is in Henry Machyn’s diary entry of 19 April 1557, in which he mentions the playing of ‘barle breyke’. It features in Sir Philip Sidney’s Arcadia, a poem about Strephon’s courtship of Urania, and is also mentioned in Fletcher and Shakespeare’s Two Noble Kinsman.
