ABSTRACT

Rolling a ball at a target appears to be a fairly universal human pleasure, almost as much as kicking and throwing a ball, stretching across time and societies. There are numerous examples of various forms of bowls being played in ancient cultures. Certainly in Britain a wide number of games derived from the original principle were being played by medieval times. Indeed, it is claimed that the Southampton Bowls Club’s Knight of the Old Green tournament, which is still played today, dates back to 1299.
