ABSTRACT
Played at Newark in Leicestershire as an early form of hockey, the sport takes its name from the practice at the end of a match when ‘Whipping Toms’ whipped the players’ legs. Players were expected to stand their ground, those that did not were booed by the crowd, but the Toms were only allowed to whip below knee-level. The last recorded match took place in 1847.
