In 1801, Joseph Strutt demonstrated that in England, a wide range of bowling and throwing games had been played over the centuries. Unfortunately, far less evidence for these games in Scotland survives. Similar games must have been equally popular in Scotland, though being a much poorer people the Scots are likely to have favoured those that did not need implements to be specially made.
