ABSTRACT
Without doubt one of the oldest of the world’s sports, organised wrestling has been in existence in varying forms at least since the beginnings of early Egyptian civilisation. It also took place in ancient Assyrian, Babylonian and Chinese societies, although it is probably most associated with Greece, having been introduced in 704 BC to the ancient Greek Olympics. Two Roman emperors, Commodus and Maximiam, were renowned for their wrestling abilities.
