ABSTRACT

The subjects to be studied at school are set out in the National Curriculum, which defines a Foundation Stage for pre-school education and sets out the subjects to be studied at each subsequent stage. There are the core subjects of English, mathematics and science, and the foundation subjects of art and design, design and technology, geography, history, information and communication technology (ICT), music, PE and personal, social and health education (PSHE). The foundation subjects have nothing to do with the Foundation Stage of education. RE is also compulsory, but is not yet part of the National Curriculum. Schools work instead to a syllabus laid down by the LEA. Each school should have its own schemes of work, setting out the elements of the National Curriculum to be studied at each stage.
