ABSTRACT

THE DIALECTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN territorialism and desire is not always primarily a relationship between the subject and its others. Nor is it necessarily a relationship of painful tension. Prior to engaging in any relationship, the subject must first determine his or her position in the world. The process of this positioning, which Lacan called the mirror stage, has been rendered in a narrative by him, and by the ancient authors of mythical tales such as the story of Narcissus. But instead of repeating those tales by analyzing them, I would like to position them in relation to territorialism and desire. 1
