ABSTRACT

During recent years, scientists and politicians alike have been faced with questions about how to create successful growth regions. Numerous studies have focused on the role of the university in regions with the most advanced technology (see Florax, 1992; Saxenian, 1994; Anselin, Varga and Acs, 1997; Varga, 1998; Acs 2002). Many companies in regions such as Silicon Valley have their origins in collaboration with the researchers responsible for innovations at local universities. Certain regions have succeeded in attracting knowledge-intensive growth companies in successful clusters.
