ABSTRACT

The selection, training and method of evaluating performance in officiating are critical for referees’ performance quality. This chapter will review work that addresses some appropriate approaches to each of these tasks. The most up-to-date research and state-of-the-art in training and evaluation systems will be presented, focusing on different types of officiating. This chapter has been placed towards the end of the book as it will reflect the training implications raised in the preceding chapters and bring many of the issues together. It will cover the selection and recruiting of officials (from volunteers to developing elites), illustrate different training systems and present evaluation systems by showing methods of assessing effectiveness in officials and possible performance declines.
