ABSTRACT

ALLAN BERUBE is the author of the award-winning book Coming Out Under Fire: The History of Gay Men and Women in World War Two and co-author of a documentary film based on his book. A community-based historian who has since 1978 written, lectured, and presented slide shows on U.S. transgender, lesbian, and gay history, Berube is a 1994-95 recepient of a Rockefeller Fellowship and a 1996 MacArthur Fellowship. He is currently working on a history of how the Marine Cooks and Stewards Union in the 1930s and 1940s worked toward racial equality, workingclass solidarity, and dignity for queens.
