ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the quality of research. Quality of a research project is not a singular characteristic. There are multiple criteria that good research should meet. One interesting, more holistic way to monitor the whole research process for methodological quality is through an audit. The chapter focuses on technical criteria for a problem statement and the concepts of validity and reliability in design research. A common way to improve internal validity is by means of triangulation. The chapter also focuses on data triangulation. If different types of data lead to the same conclusion, this enforces the validity of the findings. In design research, analytic or theoretical generalization is also feasible. In an era in which integrity and conscientiousness of scientific research are high on the agenda of both academia and politics, there is increased attention for ways to make research more transparent and replicable.
