ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Summary mode that does not introduce the narrative, but encapsulate it, repeating the important points of the plot in a schematic form that parallels the narrative in the main text. The audience must recognize the narrative dimensions of the presentation for the cause-effect relationships to emerge. Narrative interpretations proceed conventionally, guided by lexical expertise, past knowledge, and the dynamic of naturalism::stylization. These designs are heavily dependent on their location for how the audience understands what they present—as either a spoiler or a recap of the story.
