ABSTRACT

Carillon Productions is an instructional design firm that grew from a small team of instructional designers in the mid-2000s to well over 50 employees in only a few years. Carillon became well known among its clients—educational publishers—for its development of multimedia-based supplemental textbook materials. David Jimenez was an instructional designer at Carillon who had been specializing in the design of science and mathematics instruction for the past four years. His innovative and award-winning designs covered a wide range of applications from interactive problem-solving physics modules to 3-D calculus tutorials. David credited the successful design of his products to his skills as an instructional designer, to his programming skills, and to his 10 years as a secondary science teacher. His teaching experience provided him with insight into learners’ needs and enabled him to serve as both content expert and instructional developer. In this way, he was able to work on his own as he designed and developed products for Carillon’s clients. David had to modify his formula for success, however, when he was promoted to project manager and assigned to head up a project for Dragone Drilling Technologies, a leading manufacturer of petroleum analysis tools and extraction equipment. Due for market release in 90 days, Dragone Drilling’s Odysseus System was being promoted as a cost-effective technology that had the potential to revolutionize natural gas hydrate exploration. The firm wanted a training module that would encourage the use of this new analysis, archiving, and forecasting system.
