ABSTRACT

This chapter is a consideration of the role of the outside world to the Nazi assault on the Jews, as expressed through its response to the Jewish refugee issue. Two boxes are embedded in this chapter; one looking at a Righteous Gentile who sought to save lives, and one considering the role played by British diplomats in the aftermath of the Kristallnacht pogrom in November 1938. Other expressions of rescue are also recounted, as well as other individual efforts to help save Jewish lives. The role of the international community in saving (or not saving) Jews is treated in this chapter, together with a range of initiatives undertaken in various ways on behalf of Jews threatened by death at the hands of the Nazis.
