ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss technical tasks that need to be completed prior to going to the field, such as choosing recording equipment and learning how to use it. We discuss requirements for selecting equipment, including the ideal specifications for microphones, cameras and audio recorders for use in particular field conditions. Then we cover techniques for effectively using audio-visual recording equipment in a field situation. The chapter emphasises the importance of practising how to use your equipment before setting out, and contains many useful tips to make the process of recording language as successful as possible. We outline procedures for conducting the first field recording session, and conclude with the end of the recording session when the day’s recordings and field notes are transferred, checked and backed up.
