ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how Hagerstrand's ideas on landscape could be beneficial in current landscape studies. It reviews some important phases in integration of landscape and time-geography in Torsten Hagerstrand writings. The chapter focuses on chronological order, i.e., the trajectory of the landscape concept in Hagerstrand's writings using a selection of his work. It discusses Hagerstrand's writings on landscapes that have not been accessible previously to an international audience. In Hagerstrand's efforts to formulate a broader and more comprehensive framework for the time-geography approach, the landscape served as an important point of reference and from time to time he critically confronted the landscape concept. The chapter presents a summary of the "landscape of Hagerstrand". It also presents some thoughts on how time-geography and landscape studies can benefit from each other in the future. The chapter provides a brief background linking time-geography to the landscape concept in general.
