ABSTRACT

Attempting to give the answer to why we are in a state of crisis with the global environment in The Wealth of Nature explains that we are immersed in a global crisis today 'not because of how ecosystems function but rather because of how our ethical systems function'. Radical critics of deep ecology call for a more detailed form of ethical thinking and consider that ecocritics can in fact manipulate our conception of the environment. Some deep ecologists consider that there are close connections between certain streams in world religions and deep ecology. Like Carson's criticism of chemical farming, Hughes claims that the 'whether we liked it or not, we were in the front line of the first campaign of what felt very much like the Third World War conducted by other means the EEC Agricultural Policy War'.
