ABSTRACT
Chapter 9 discusses the ways in which one party with private information communicates that information via certain signals to a party without it. Many behaviors in social life function to transmit signals and aid in resolving the problem of adverse selection. Considerable space was allocated to discusses how social norms like gift exchanges signal willingness to cooperate. Of course, this kind of social norm may lead to wasteful behavior.
