ABSTRACT

In an analysis of the impacts of the sharing economy on a tourism destination's resilience, this chapter focuses on one of the most prominent peer-to-peer companies, Airbnb, a platform which facilitates accommodation bookings online. It discusses the concept of destination resilience and then empirically analyses selected potential impacts of the sharing economy stress to a destination's resilience. The chapter also focuses on the cumulative stress factors of the sharing economy, which have affected traditional economies in many countries around the globe in various ways, and challenged tourism destinations' response and adaptation capabilities. It presents selected results of two exploratory empirical studies: first, a number of tourism stakeholder interviews conducted to understand opinions about Airbnb in Western Australia; second, a number of assessments gathered in the context of an online survey among Airbnb users, hosts and guests, in Germany.
