ABSTRACT

Once the PBS KIDS development team finds a curricular area the people think is important to cover for a Ready to Learn grant, they then build it into a request for proposals for producers and series creators who have expressed an interest in working with the reader. The PBS KIDS development team focuses on finding creators who are both talented and inspired and are drawn to the idea of producing mission-driven programming. This chapter discusses the development of games and other digital content for PBS KIDS series. Often as early as the series scripting phase, creators, production teams, and curriculum experts work together to craft game ideas that are natural and organic to the show's characters and worlds. The children’s media industry has changed dramatically since PBS’ inception in 1968, and children now have thousands of choices when they consider what to watch or play.
