ABSTRACT

College and university presidents are the most visible leaders at higher education institutions. They are at the top of the organizational chart, answer directly to a board of trustees or system governing board, and act in many ways as an academic “CEO.” Given this position of power and influence, and with many college presidents being prominent public and political figures, there exists extensive literature concerning the college presidency, including several book-length treatments of the characteristics, leadership styles, powers, and successes and failures of presidents (Fisher, 1984; Birnbaum, 1992; Crowley, 1994; Trachtenberg, Kauvar, & Bogue, 2013).
