ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the benefits of using arts-based group treatment approaches with adolescents to promote affect regulation. The authors define affect regulation and related processes, with an emphasis on how these capacities connect to adolescent brain development. They adapt principles from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as they relate to the fostering of self-regulation skills. The group provides a context and case examples drawn from a museum-based art therapy group for teens with emotional disorders that has been in operation in Naples, Florida since the fall of 2014.
