ABSTRACT

Heritage resources reflect the ingenuity, inspiration, and imagination of humanity. This chapter provides examples of climate change effects to natural and cultural heritage resources and traditional cultural knowledge/practices. It is important to remember that for every tangible heritage resource lost (natural and cultural) to climate change, individuals and communities with ties to those resources often experience a deep sense of loss. At the highest level of international governance, the Sendai Framework provides guidance for governments to consult with local communities and indigenous groups to identify their concerns regarding climate change as well as actively engage them in planning for resilience. Further to development planning, an important aspect to be considered by the ministries of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and water resources globally is consideration of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) in resource and land-use plans.
