ABSTRACT

The coda reflects at length on Stephen Windham's 1998 poem “At a Tribute to Robert Johnson Held at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change,” and considers the relationship between, and reputational fortunes of, Robert Johnson and Johnny Shines. Windham's poem is presented as the poet's resolute conviction that his experience of hearing Johnny Shines perform amounts to something more than simply a memorable anecdote.
