ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book deals primarily with the relationship between the media and democracy. It tackles questions about free speech and what the media should, and should not, be allowed to say. The book then discusses the thorny issue of bias and ideology in the media. It also examines the use of the term “immigration” in the Brexit campaign. The book considers ethical issues relating to politicians’ privacy and addresses the topic of political correctness. It then offers an analysis of what exactly ideology is, focuses on the function of ideology and draws a distinction between causal and teleological notions of function, and argues that scholars should prefer a teleological account. The book also explores claims of voter stupidity after unwelcome political events, such as Brexit or Donald Trump’s rise.
