ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter provides a brief overview of trends and issues in both digital learning and digital language learning in higher education in order to situate the content of the book. The growth of digital learning overall and in language programs, as well as its pedagogical, economic, and other motivations, are addressed in this chapter, along with special challenges for technology in language programs. Works cited in this chapter draw from both education literature and language teaching literature.
