ABSTRACT

Most language programs or institutions offer technology training to instructors. This variable was positively correlated with instructors’ reported satisfaction with courses’ setup as well as their estimation of course success. Whether instructors used any of the training options was significantly correlated with their ratings of courses’ success, suggesting that the availability of training is a reflection of a program’s commitment to digital learning. Instructors rated various types of training overwhelmingly positively. Most administrators reported that their programs received little institutional financial or technical support for their blended courses. Some examples of such support were a summer grant for course development, a new faculty position, and teaching assistant support for materials development. As blended and distance programs grow, the need increases for programs to support instructors, both by providing more substantial training options and by encouraging them to collaborate for the benefit of courses and students. Two-thirds of instructors reported that their students were provided with an orientation or training to familiarize them with the online materials, but of the students surveyed, fewer than half reported that they were provided with such training, suggesting that more work can be done on student support.
