ABSTRACT

The concept of “us and them” is one that is rapidly losing its legitimacy as publishers and the public join forces online. Instead, collaborative projects between traditional journalists and their amateur counterparts are increasingly populating the virtual space of news organizations as they experiment with new ways of engaging audiences via innovative forms of digital storytelling. This process of welcoming the public and other—sometimes competing—organizations into the exclusive journalism fold is fraught with complex challenges both ideological and practical.
