ABSTRACT

Korean professional golf, especially women’s golf, has shown notable development and success over the last four decades. In fact, over these 40 years, Korean women’s golf has nurtured numerous golf professionals such as Se Ri Pak, Grace Park, Mi-Hyun Kim, Jiyai Shin, Inbee Park, and So Yeon Ryu. The global success of Korean women’s golf has made an impact on Korean society and its success has aroused curiosity about the basis and reason for this success. In this chapter, the authors bring women’s golf in South Korea to light, identifying its socio-historical development. To identify the elements contributing to this development the authors describe the organizational movement from its initial establishment to its current status, and compare women’s professional golf and men’s professional golf. Furthermore, the authors also describe the educational development of golf among the populace in South Korea for a better understanding of the positioning of women’s golf and its development.
