ABSTRACT

1301a 20–5. From what causes political systems change and their number and the nature. Aristotle (A.) is concerned with all changes (metabolai) to political systems, not only those which arise from violence or peaceful revolution. At the outset he is at pains to stress the diverse nature and causes of these, making a deliberate contrast with the unilinear process described by Plato in the Republic, an account which he turns to criticise at the end of the book (1315b 40).
