ABSTRACT

For the first two modes of governance in the Anthropocene the task is that of managing or preventing the unfolding of the Anthropocene. For Mapping approaches, governance problems are to be addressed through the reactive or adaptive governance of path-dependencies and feedback loops on the assumption that the interconnections between human actions and their recursive effects can be seen, understood and acted upon. For the sciences of Sensing, these responsivities are focused not on non-linear causal chains of interconnection but on correlations, which enable the datafication of the world, so that effects can be seen in their emergence. For the imaginary of these governance modes based on the ontopolitical assumptions of the Anthropocene, complexity does just enough to problematise modernist understandings of universal knowledge and linear causality while still retaining the human subject able to guide and manipulate processes, if not govern them directly, though techniques and technologies of tracing, mapping and sensing.
