ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses a theoretical framework based around notions of neo- institutionalism to evaluate the evolving nature of space policy in Europe. Institutionalism used as a theoretical framework and methodological tool can provide clear insights into the development of the sector and the resulting developments made to the European political landscape. The book considers achievements of European space programmes. The European Space Agency and other international partners are working ever closer with China in the exploration of outer space from low earth orbit to deep space. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of the European space industry in the ‘authoring’ of European space policy, culminating in the European Commission’s 2016 Space Strategy for Europe document. It discusses the Moon Village concept within the context of the increasing momentum to return human beings to the surface of the Moon.
