ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the role and increasing relevance of space for security in Europe from the neo-institutionalism perspective, and more specifically from the historical institutionalism viewpoint. It includes the study of space and security in the strategies and policies of international organisations and governmental entities in Europe, as situated in the specific geopolitical climate and the rise of Space 4.0. International cooperation and diplomacy, although relevant, are left out of the scope of the chapter, focuses on European policy and strategy, considering Europe’s current and future capabilities, infrastructure and applications in the field of space and security. It describes further specific elements in the strategies, policies and activities of European Space Agency, the European Union and their respective Member States. The chapter provides concrete examples of the integration of space security and defence aspects in the strategic and policy objectives and space governance of selected Member States.
