ABSTRACT

I now turn my attention to quantitative epistemic evaluation and introduce a new format of epistemic evaluation intended for probabilistic models. The basic principles of probabilistic modeling this chapter expounds on are well understood among statisticians, especially in statistical learning theory. 1 I believe, however, that the distinctive features of probabilistic modeling and its relation to qualitative evaluation are not fully appreciated in the philosophical literature. So, I will review some basic points, starting with the notion of a model.
