ABSTRACT

Creating units using backward design helps to ensure that children meet standards and that they also gain concepts that will transfer to new learning situations. This method of planning allows for flexibility to meet the needs of each unique group of learners while also providing a structure that helps to ensure that desired outcomes are met. This chapter provides a form for creating backward design units for children in the early childhood years. A rubric for critiquing backward design units and tips for peer assessment of units is provided. The chapter includes three sample units; a ball investigation for infants and toddlers; a butterfly project for preschool children; and a hero’s unit for second-grade children.
