ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses powerful strategies that support learning for young children. Each strategy was chosen because it was developmentally appropriate, suitable for a wide variety of ages, could be used in multiple curricular areas, and was research-based. These early childhood strategies are divided into three sections; a child-centered approach, teaching learners how to learn, and using powerful teaching techniques. Teaching learners how to learn includes helping learners to ask good questions, helping learners reflect on their learning, and teaching learners thinking routines. Powerful teaching techniques include using cooperative learning, providing authentic learning, assisting learners to identify likenesses and differences, and encouraging learners to use visual representations. The research basis for each strategy is provided.
