ABSTRACT

Integral to the backward design model is the development of integrated units that allow for deep exploration and learning. This chapter focuses on designing investigations, integrated units, and projects for children in the early childhood years. Included is information on how to organize units; choose a topic that allows deep, inquiry-based learning; and how to effectively implement the unit. Learn about creating a provocation, determining what children know about the topic, creating an anticipatory curriculum web, planning learning experiences, choosing an effective learning context, monitoring for learning and understanding, documenting and sharing children’s learning, and involving families. The research basis for integrating curriculum is also discussed.
