ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims at supporting both students about to enter the field and existing practitioners who are looking for a resource to support their everyday practice. It reviews key legislation and policies, which are enshrined within the practice of supporting both practitioners and pupils. The book examines the importance of safeguarding and child protection within the context education in particular. It outlines key legislation and statutory guidance in the area of safeguarding and child protection and relates these to the area of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). The book explores how multi-agency practice is at the centre of the changing role of the SEND practitioner and examines the roles that a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and a Teaching Assistant carry out within the SEND context.
