ABSTRACT

Individuals with less severe intellectual deficits are capable of independent functioning, employment, and social relationships, including marriage and children. Intellectual disabilities are also caused by a variety of incidents that can occur before, during, and after birth. Intellectual levels are based on an Intelligence Quotients score below 70 to 75 on a standardized intelligence scale. Teachers and parents should provide children with opportunities for appropriate emotional outlets for play, recess, and physical activity, as well as reinforcing acceptable behaviors to provide incentives for children to participate in physical activities. Teachers can become discouraged with the child’s level of progress or lack of progress during physical activity classes. For teachers, who are limited by time and the number of children in their class, community- and home-based programs can enhance their instructional program. Children with ID have a tendency toward low levels of physical fitness.
