ABSTRACT

This chapter contains the information on how to develop home programs that will benefit children with specific needs. The adapted physical education teacher’s role has evolved from one of providing direct services to students with disabilities to working with special educators, physical/occupational therapists, administrators. The services of a physical therapist may be sporadic or nonexistent in some school districts, ongoing consultation on even a limited basis can effectively enable parents, teachers, and therapists to accomplish common goals. Immediate and long-range goals of physical education are to develop physical and motor fitness, motor skills, social skills, and positive attitudes toward participation that carry over into life outside of school and beyond the school years. Parent education meetings are then implemented to promote understanding and knowledge of issues that affect physical fitness and recreational or motor skill development. Parents of children with disabilities are the most important members of the collaborative team.
