ABSTRACT

The chapter demonstrates how the degradation of abundance of biodiversity has resulted in worsening the economic conditions of women in India. The chapter argues that women’s contribution in management and conservation of biodiversity has been ignored and undervalued at the national as well as international levels despite their unique position and understanding of biodiversity. The chapter claims that barring the exhortation in the Convention on Biological Diversity, 1992, there is hardly any mention elsewhere to recognize women’s vital role in conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. Bearing in mind the rapid shrinking of biodiversity across the globe, the author advocates for an urgent need to bring to the fore the role of women in sustaining and safeguarding the biodiversity.
