ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the changes in performance brought about by digital technologies. It begins by arguing that there has been a significant blurring of the distinction between performer, composer and audience. It goes on to describe a range of performance situations and how they have been affected by digital developments. It discusses in detail networked performance and installation work. It considers the nature of the digital musical score and its effect on performance. It examines what it means to be ‘live’ and looks at improvisation in a digital context. It discusses two characteristically digital performance activities: live coding and working with artificial intelligence. The chapter includes comments on performance from the case study musicians. It offers some critical questions as food for thought. It provides three creative projects for practical work in class, and a list of recommended further readings and suggested listening.
